To Mary (Goldhawk/Vazeille) Wesley [ Lewisham ]
Wednesday afternoon [January 7, 1756]

When I saw you, my dear, I did not expect to have so large a demand made so suddenly upon me. I shall be puzzled to answer it, without coming to town on purpose, which I am unwilling to do, before I have finished the Address .

1 JW was apparently staying at the home of Ebenezer and Elizabeth Blackwell , in Lewisham , to have concentrated time to write An Address to the Clergy (1756); see Bibliography, No. 216 , and vol. 14 of this edn .
I desire you would give John Spenser
2 John Spenser (or Spencer) was one of JW 's publishing assistants at the Foundery ; see letters to Mary Wesley , May 7 and June 18, 1756 .

3 William Atkinson of Plymouth Dock (Devonport) was another of JW 's assistants at the Foundery (see his letter to JW , Nov. 20, 1753, 26:531–32 in this edn.).

4This does not appear to be JW 's correspondent Richard Davenport (see 26:390) . More likely is B. Davenport , a partner of Joseph Johnson in London in book-selling , who are listed in 1756 among the publishers of 's .
