To Samuel Furly London
March 8, 1757

Dear Sammy,

I have preached on that subject again and again, and shall do when it comes my way. Pray look into Mr. Taylor’s note on that verse of 2 Tim.: ‘taken captive at his will’.

12 Tim. 2:26. JW refers here to John Taylor’s The Scripture-Doctrine of Original Sin Proposed to Free and Candid Examination (3rd edn.; London, 1750), 152. Wesley was at work on a response to Taylor, which he published later this year; on this point, see 12:269 in this edn.
See the verse he cites from Homer.
2In a note on p. 154, Taylor referred to Homer’s Iliad, Book V, line 698, in his attempt to explain the Greek expression translated ‘to revive’.
Consult the book and tell me whether his assertion be true or false.

His Latin is not easy and natural. It is abundantly too laboured and thence less easy to be understood. This is an essential defect in his language.

Have not time? Why have not you time? When I was at the university, I had always time to do whatever I would. And so I should now, but that

Last week you was in great danger. Thomas Walsh and I were within twelve miles of Cambridge. But the Norwich coach could not go out of its way. So you are escaped.

Above all knowledge, know Christ. I am, Your affectionate brother,
J. Wesley
