Johnson (1725–1803) was a native of
Somerset who became a Methodist itinerant in 1753 (see 10:260 in this edn.) and
spent most of his career preaching in Ireland. He was for a
while General Assistant for the Irish work, but became about this time the center of
some dissent. See Vickers, Dictionary, 182.
