William Barnard, a graduate of Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge, was consecrated Bishop of Derry in 1747, a role he held until his death. He was one of the few Anglican bishops supportive of the Methodist work, as evidenced by his ordination of both John Haughton and Thomas Maxfield. He was married to Anne (née Stone, d. 1782).
