Downes was one of JW's earliest and most trusted lay preachers. He was artistically gifted and engraved a portrait of JW for Explanatory Notes upon the New Testament. On June 26, 1764 he married Dorothy Furly, one of JW's frequent correspondents. When he ceased traveling, due to ill health, Downes became JW's printer. See Atmore, Memorial, 109–10; DEB, 321; and Vickers, Dictionary, 99.
